It sounds the same everywhere
in the canyons, on the street
Civilization's humming
looking bored, tapping its feet
Waiting on something better
that it's never seen before
certain against all hope
that a change will come to be.
I'm waiting in the shadows
beneath the buildings
that hum. I'm waiting
on my life to start
ready to have fun.
No one sits with me
for lack of time. Everyone runs
with eyes wide open
to exhaust demanding minds.
'Why aren't you rich?' 'What of
your dreams?'
over and over again.
Wants and needs and fears and wants
echo in
dreams of men.
Too many are nothing special
a lot are nothing at all.
Millions live in pieces
-- and the pieces have to crawl.
Sub-arctic manners towards
sub-humans
deference to the great. Society lies
with a poker face:
'We'll all have turns,
just wait.'
I've waited and waited 'til
my teeth feel tired.
My toes are soaked with sweat
I've practiced my lines.
I've been on time and
I'm still nothing yet.
I can cruise through crowds
unrecognized; alone, unknown
forgotten.
Civilization hums and
sings of sweet dreams
but the dreams have
all turned rotten.
When you realize
how empty, when you realize
it's false,
where're you gonna go
when you're 22 and you've
given it your all?
Will you marry someone
who doesn't know
that you're a lifeless shell--
are you so drained
that you'll pick her brain
and take her life as well?
Cardboard cut-out people
positioned in the dark
unable to move towards
each other
praying for a spark.
A spark of tender flame
to burn them all to cinders,
pollute the sky with
broken dreams
and the land
with Freed-At-Last embers.
